VARK Learning Styles
Acquiring knowledge or skills through learning is a multifaceted process that involves the learner's biological attributes and senses (the physiological dimension); personality traits like motivation, emotion, and attention (the affective dimension); cognitive abilities (the cognitive dimension); and psychological/individual variations (the psychological dimension). In this work, we examine the physiological aspect of learning styles, paying particular attention to the senses that are employed (VARK - A Guide to Learning Preferences, 2019). For the physiological dimension of learning styles, the VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic) typology is often used.
Why It Matters?
- Visual: Those who learn best visually enjoy seeing things demonstrated and can pick up knowledge from descriptions. Noise does not divert them; movement or action does.
- Auditory: Students who learn best by listening. They enjoy hearing talks and directions delivered to them verbally. Noise can easily divert them.
- Read/write students should take notes. To recall things, they frequently sketch them. They perform well on practical assignments or projects.
- Kinesthetic learners learn best via doing. They like practical experiences over theoretical ones. They often perform poorly in the classroom and would rather not observe or listen.
It may be beneficial for people to be aware of their individual learning preferences. Utilizing visual study techniques in addition to other learning strategies may help you retain information better and enjoy your studies more if you are aware that visual learning is what you find most engaging.
"If no single learning preference calls out to you or you change preferences based on the situation or the type of information you are learning, you probably have what is known as a multimodal style." (Cherry, 2023)
For example, if you are taking a course like "History of Psychology," which involves a lot of reading and taking notes, you may rely on your personal preferences when it comes to writing and reading. You may rely more on your kinesthetic and visual senses when taking an art class as you pick up new skills and absorb visual information.
